Fruits and fruit juices are best to be consumed before or between meals.

Drinking excessively during a meal can reduce enzyme activity and hence impair you digestion.

Eating quickly will increase the amount of air and the size of the food swallowed and this in turm will lead to indequate digestion and more gas being produced.

To reduce the risk of overeating spread your meals evenly throughout the day and don't leave the largest meal until the evening.

Some common causes of inefficient digestion are not chewing well enough and eating too fast.

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can damage the lining of the intestinal tract and adversely affect the absorption of nutrients, leading to sub-clinical malnutrition.

Overuse of laxatives can result in poor absorption of vitamins and minerals from food, by hastening the intestinal transit time.

Lenghty cooking or reheating of meat and vegetables can oxidise and destroy heat susceptible vitamins such as the B-group, C and E. Some vitamins, such as vitamin B6 can be destroyed by irradiation from microwaves.

Exercise works the diaphragm, which massages the intestines and thereby improves digestion, regulates appetite, blood sugar control and metabolism.
