The Best Foods to Eat During Pregnancy

Empower Yourself For A Healthy Pregnancy

After successfully falling pregnant, your thoughts will turn to experiencing a healthy pregnancy and a successful birthing experience. You will also want to give your unborn child the best possible start in life, and one of the ways you can do this is to improve your diet so that your child gets all the necessary nutrition while still developing in the womb. Proper nutrition is vital during every stage of foetal development and if you don’t eat right, nor will your growing baby.

Eating right is something only you can do for your unborn baby, and that means eating the types of foods with nutrients that will support a healthy pregnancy.

Listed here are some of the best foods you can easily include in your diet to ensure that your child is well-nourished while you are pregnant.

Vitamin D

This vitamin is mainly made by the body when you are exposed to sunlight and if you live in an area where there is a lot of sunshine, try and spend some time in the sun each day. Vitamin D lowers the risk of complications during pregnancy and is essential for the formation of healthy bones as well as brain health and the development of a healthy heart. A deficiency of this vitamin can have a negative impact on your own health and also that of your baby, possibly even in the long term.  There are foods such as oily fish like trout, tuna and sardines which are abundant in vitamin D. Other sources are mushrooms and fortified whole grain cereals. A natural vitamin D supplement will also do the trick.

Free Range Organic Eggs

Eggs are a wonderful source of protein, fat and other nutrients such as choline, which helps to reduce the risk of certain defects like spina bifida.

Whole Dairy Products

Full-fat dairy products such as butter, cheese, milk etc, provide healthy fats, protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc and B vitamins.

Wild Caught Fish

These fish, as opposed to fish raised on a fish-farm environment, are a source of animal-based omega 3 fats.

Sweet Potatoes

They are rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant which helps to support the immune system, as well as lower your risk of heart disease.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens, like broccoli, spinach and kale are loaded with fantastic nutrients which benefit pregnant women, including folate (folic acid) potassium, calcium, iron, and vitamins C,K, & A. These veggies are also rich in antioxidants and fibre.

Organic Beef And Chicken

They are an excellent source of protein and actually provide all the B vitamins and a number of other nutrients.

Berries

They contain much less sugar than many other fruits and have high levels of vitamin C, which is such a vital vitamin. Research has shown that berries also have concentrated amounts of natural chemicals which boost the immune system, protect the heart, and help to prevent cancer plus certain allergies.

Avocados

At least 20 health-supporting nutrients are found in avocados. These nutrients include potassium, Vitamins E and K and C, and B vitamins along with folic acid.  Avocados are also a source of healthy mono-unsaturated fats.

Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are an all-in-one source of plant protein, healthy fats, fibre, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. These seeds have many health benefits, are ready to eat and have a long shelf-life, unlike some other seeds which can quickly go rancid.

Add as many of these as you can to your diet, and eat as often as you can! It will go a long way towards achieving your goal of a healthy pregnancy and the successful birth of a healthy baby!

How to Create a Healthier Home

It is very important to keep your home as clean as possible. Vacuuming the carpets regularly will help to keep dust mites at bay, carefully washing items like your blender to remove germs, replacing bathroom items like face cloths, sponges and loofahs on a regular basis will also help avoid infections. However, cleanliness alone will not create a healthier home, because the greatest risks in your home actually come from the chemicals in common household products.

This includes foodstuff and it is essential that you read the list of ingredients before you buy anything. This also applies to personal items and things you may use around the house. Get familiar with the product ingredient lists, and try and find out what they mean, and which are potentially harmful.

As much as possible, buy and eat organic and free range produce, as well as organic meats to reduce your exposure to added hormones, pesticides, and fertilisers. Also avoid milk and other dairy products that contain the genetically engineered bovine growth hormone.

Here are some tips to help you on your way to creating a healthier home:

  1. Eating just any fish can be risky. Sometimes farm raised fish are contaminated with mercury and can damage your health. If possible, opt for sea-caught fish, or freshwater river fish and supplement your diet with a high-quality purified krill oil.
  2. Buy products that come in glass bottles or jars rather than plastic or cans since chemicals can be emitted out of plastics and into the contents.
  3. Wherever possible avoid using plastic wrap to store food. Eat mostly raw or freshly prepared food. Replace your non-stick pots and pans with ceramic or glass cookware.
  4. Filter your tap water. Tap water contains many additives and some areas even fluoride which is reported to be very toxic.
  5. Look for products that are manufactured by companies that are environmentally friendly, prefer to use natural and organic materials, and do not consider any products which have been tested on animals. This applies to everything from food and personal care products to building materials, carpeting, paint, baby items, upholstery, and more.
  6. Use a vacuum cleaner with a high-efficiency filter to remove house dust, which is often contaminated with traces of chemicals.
  7. When buying new products such as furniture, mattresses, carpets, rugs etc opt for items made from naturally less flammable materials, such as leather, wool and cotton. Potentially harmful chemicals are present in products that have been commercially treated to resist fire.
  8. Avoid stain- and water-resistant clothing, furniture and carpets which have been chemically treated.
  9. Minimise your use of plastic baby and child toys, opting instead for those made of natural wood or fabric instead.
  10. Only use natural cleaning products in your home or if possible, find out how to make your own. Switch over to organic brands of toiletries such as shampoo, toothpaste, antiperspirants, and cosmetics. You can replace many different products with coconut oil and baking soda which has strong alkalising properties. The EWG database can help you find personal care products that are free of phthalates and other potentially dangerous chemicals .
  11. There are also safer alternatives for the feminine hygiene products like tampons and sanitary pads.
  12. Avoid artificial air fresheners, fabric softeners, which are loaded with synthetic fragrances.
  13. Look for products that are fragrance-free. A single artificial fragrance can contain hundreds – even thousands – of potentially toxic chemicals.
  14. Replace your vinyl shower curtain with one made of fabric, or better still, a glass shower door.

These Things Are Not as Healthy as You Think They Are!

Thanks to research and education, awareness is increasing amongst consumers regarding the hidden dangers in some ordinary household goods ranging from personal care items to food-packaging, plastic containers used for storage, certain items of furniture and even some children’s toys.

Before the results of intensive research pointed to the dangers of these seemingly harmless items in the home, a lack of awareness reigned as you recklessly exposed yourself and your family to the effects of potentially harmful chemicals.

Here is a list of just some of the so-called healthy items it will better not to have in your home:

Antibacterial Soap

Washing your hands is your number one protection against the acquisition and spread of infectious disease. But you do not need to use antibacterial soap to get the job done.

Studies have shown that people who use antibacterial soaps and cleansers develop flu symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, sore throat, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, just as often as people who use regular soaps. [1]

One reason for this is because flu symptoms are actually caused by viruses, which antibacterial soaps can’t kill.

But even for symptoms like vomiting and diarrhoea, which may be caused by bacteria, published studies have conclusively shown using antibacterial soaps offer you no advantage over plain soap and water. [2]

The negative side of antibacterial soap is the fact that it contains an antibacterial chemical known as triclosan. There are concerns that this chemical has been linked to antibiotic resistance.

Whitening or Antibacterial Toothpaste

Everyone wants shiny white teeth, just like the movie stars! However whitening toothpastes may be grittier in order to scrub stains off your teeth, but the grit may actually wear away your enamel or make your teeth and gums more sensitive. Also be aware that some brands of antibacterial toothpaste contain triclosan.

Many commercial brands may be loaded with toxic toothpaste ingredients, like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS,) fluoride, propylene glycol, and microbeads, which are all potentially harmful. Take care when purchasing commercial toothpaste brands. Always read the label to see what the constituents are.

Cotton Swabs

Cotton swaps are mostly used in an effort to remove wax from your ears. Ears essentially need a healthy amount of wax which should move out of your ear canal automatically. The earwax removal is assisted by the movements of your jaw such as chewing, talking etc. Once the wax reaches your outer ear it will fall out or be removed when your shower or bathe.

According to studies conducted by the US Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, under normal circumstances, the ear canal should never have to be cleaned – and especially not with cotton swabs.

This is the foundation’s noted conclusion: “Unfortunately, many people mistakenly believe that earwax should be routinely removed for personal hygiene. This is not so. In fact, attempting to remove earwax with cotton-tipped swabs, bobby pins, or other probing devices can result in damage to the ear, including trauma, impaction of the earwax, or even temporary deafness. These objects only push the wax in deeper and can completely block the ear canal.

When earwax is pushed deep into your ear where it doesn’t belong, it can bring fungus, bacteria, and viruses from the outer ear into the inner ear, increasing the risk of infection. It can also block your ear canal, leading to hearing loss, or even cause a ruptured eardrum.

Regular use of cotton swabs puts you at risk of potential loss of hearing.

Humidifier

During the winter months, heaters and cold temperatures may lead to dry air with low humidity. This dry air can result in dry skin, irritated sinuses and throat, and itchy eyes. Over time, exposure to low humidity can even dry out and inflame the mucous membrane lining your respiratory tract. When this natural barrier is no longer working properly, it increases your risk of colds, the flu, and other infections.

If the dry air becomes a major problem in your home, you might consider buying a humidifier to add some humidity to the air. You must be very careful about making sure your humidity levels are not too high, as high humidity will cause mould to grow, which could be very harmful to your health. Also bear in mind that warm, moist air is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi which will be expelled from the unit as a mist that you could inhale and so further damage your health.

Research has shown that breathing in dirty mist from humidifiers can lead to lung problems and is linked to an increased risk of asthma in children. It is recommended that you clean the humidifier regularly and if possible, purchase a unit with a built-in humidity measurement device. The water in the reservoir should be changed daily, and be sure the area around it (tabletops, windows, carpeting, curtains, etc.) are kept dry.

Loofah

The loofah, a spongy hand-held scrubber used to scrub dead cells off your body, is actually the perfect home for bacteria, fungi, and mould to grow. If it is not properly washed and dried after each use, the humidity of your bathroom or shower will foster the growth of bacteria. The next time you buy a loofah, consider one made of a natural fibre which will naturally contain enzymes to inhibit microbial growth. Replace it on a regular basis and store in a cool, dry place.

Blender

Blenders are handy items to use in the kitchen for all sorts of food preparation, but if you are not washing yours properly, it could be a problem. The blender gasket (the rubber ring that holds the blade portion of the blender in place) has been found to be full of germs, and research showed it often harboured salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mould. [3] The solution is simple – when you’re done using your blender, be sure to disassemble it completely and wash each part, including the gasket, well.

Nail Tools

Pumice stones, cuticle clippers, and other nail tools contain bacteria from your skin. If you neglect to wash them, they could potentially cause skin infections. Nail tools should be washed with soap and water after each use, and pumice stones should be replaced every three to four weeks.

Rubber Spatula
Rubber spatulas, used mainly in the kitchen, contain a very high concentration of bacteria, encouraging the growth of e coli, yeast and mould. The problem arises when the spatula is not properly cleaned. The spatula head needs to be removed from the handle and each piece washed separately.

Stuffed Animals

Stuffed animals are known to collect dust mites, which are a major cause of indoor dust allergies. Children with allergies should not be given stuffed toys to play with as exposure can lead to sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and other symptoms. If your child can’t part with theirs, cut the number down to one or two kept on the bed, with the rest stored on a shelf. You can also put the stuffed animals in a plastic bag and leave it in the freezer overnight, as the cold will kill the dust mites.

Scented Candles, Incense and Air fresheners, and Personal Care Products

These items can bring a pleasant ambience to a home, but they come with some undisclosed health hazards. The products emit some potent chemicals which have been linked to certain hormone disruptions, allergies, asthma and even some cancers. Use with caution, or better still, not at all! Care must also be taken when selecting personal care products. Some of them contain chemicals known as phthalates which are used in the manufacture of plastics. Research has shown that these chemicals are linked to an increased risk of miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy, and possible infertility in both women and men.

High BPA Levels Can Aggravate Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

What is BPA?

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is a chemical found in hard plastics, and the inside coating of food and drink cans. BPA is used in the making of many products, including water bottles, baby bottles, dental fillings and devices, eyeglass lenses, DVD’s and CD’s, to name but a few. BPA is a chemical in the environment which can imitate our body’s own hormones in a way that could be hazardous for health.

What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

(PCOS) Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a serious hormonal imbalance common to women of reproductive age. The condition is recognized as a complex endocrine disorder with long-term complications if not diagnosed and treated early in life.

The endocrine system is a network of glands that secrete chemicals called hormones to help your body function properly.

How do high levels of BPA affect Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

BPA is a chemical which disrupts the endocrine system by interfering with the production, secretion and function of natural hormones, especially that of oestrogen. Your body’s natural oestrogen is imitated by what is known as Xeno (foreign) oestrogen released into the blood by BPA.

Researchers have reported that women with polycystic ovarian syndrome have a higher level of BPA in the body. The study also showed that there is a close relationship between BPA and the levels of androgens (male hormones) as well as insulin resistance in the system.

High levels of male hormones and insulin resistance is believed to be one of the reasons why you may suffer from PCOS.

Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and other adverse hormone conditions suffer unwanted hair growth and may have acne, problems with menstruation, trouble losing weight and perhaps even diabetes.

These symptoms are aggravated by high levels of BPA in the blood.

Get your BPA levels tested to treat Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

If you are still of reproductive age and have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and are not sure what to do, begin by getting your serum BPA levels tested. Next, visit a good health practitioner to assist you with treatment and advice.

A Low Sperm Count is the Most Common Fertility Problem for Men

What is a low sperm count?

When the sperm count, which is the concentration of sperm per millilitre of semen, is abnormally low, there is a greatly reduced chance of the female egg being fertilised. This is construed as a degree of infertility.

After a year or more of unprotected sex, if pregnancy has not occurred, you should both see a fertility specialist. Included in the tests the doctor may want to conduct, will most likely be a semen analysis. This analysis will test the quality and quantity of your sperm.

If either the quality or quantity of the sperm is poor, it will impact negatively on its ability to penetrate and fertilise the egg. The World Health Organisation have set parameters as to what is considered to be the normal level in terms of sperm count, for fertilisation to take place.

Anything outside these parameters could result in you being classified as infertile.

How can a low sperm count be treated?

There are natural fertility treatment options that have proved to be successful in the treatment of a low sperm volume.

Research has shown that natural supplements such as ginseng, vitamin C, zinc and lycopene, have been beneficial to men with low sperm issues. Healthy eating and some positive lifestyle changes can also improve the sperm quality, as well as increase your sperm count. Talk to your practitioner to determine which products best suit your needs.

Medical science cannot give you a magic pill that will bump up your sperm count. You will have to take action and personal responsibility to deal with your low sperm problems. The best option is to take stock of your lifestyle and eliminate anything which could be standing in the way of you becoming a father.

Some ways to help you naturally increase your sperm count

  • Quit smoking or cut down drastically, avoid recreational drugs.
  • Use alcohol moderately, as excessive use can make you even less fertile.
  • Develop a healthy, balanced, nutritional diet which will also work wonders for your general well-being.
  • Embarking on a regular exercise program will help you to lose extra weight you may be carrying. Obesity has a definite negative impact on fertility.
  • Visit a natural health practitioner and get expert advice as to which would be the best supplements to take for low sperm count.
  • Wherever possible, put stress on the back burner or utilise effective stress-reduction techniques and employ psychological counselling if needed.

Environmental factors which may affect your sperm count

  • Sometimes exposure to heavy metal and smoke-filled areas can contribute to a low sperm count.
  • Identify and eliminate environmental pollutants
  • Never carry your cell phone in your pants pocket. It emits microwaves which are absolutely not sperm friendly.
  • Stay away from saunas, hot baths and tight underwear. Extreme heat or cold also affect sperm volume and quality.

Positive lifestyle changes and supervised well–tailored nutritional protocol will give you at least a fighting chance.

Changing your lifestyle and discarding old bad habits might not be the easiest thing to do, but if you focus on what the end result could be, it will be worth the effort.

Cell phone use can damage your child’s future fertility

Infertility rates worldwide are on the rise and if current trends continue, the adults of tomorrow could be worse off than their parents are today. Studies have shown that the increased use of cell phones and wireless devices has had a dangerous and negative effect on male fertility potential.

The safety standards for cell phone emissions were set 17 years ago, and have never been updated. These days cell phones are very different, as are users of cell phones. Present users have evolved from mainly adults, to a prolific number of children who now use the device.

New scientific evidence has been presented to the effect that exposure to microwave radiation has indisputable health risks. This is especially true in the case of children, many of whom are allowed almost unlimited use of their phones.

Wireless devices, mainly cell phones, is the biggest and fastest growing industry the world has ever known. Very little has been publicised about the radiation dangers involved, with the result that many people are still somewhat unaware of the possible risks.

How is a fertility problem linked to my child’s use of a cell phone?

On-going research has shown a direct link between the duration, over time, of cell phone use and sperm count decline, as well as a weakening in the quality and motility of sperm. If your child is using a cell phone with unchecked access, the ugly spectre of a fertility problem could suddenly rear its head when he is of reproductive age and wants to start a family.

As yet there has been no research regarding the effects on female eggs. However there is a school of thought that because eggs are not replenished like sperm is, there could be an eventual more serious consequence for females, whose eggs are actually determined for life.

Is this kind of radiation only emitted by cell phones?

No, definitely not. Dangerous radiation from other sources include:

  • Wi-Fi routers in homes and in schools
  • Cell phone towers
  • Baby monitors
  • Cordless phones
  • Bluetooth and other earpieces
  • Tablets and I Pads
  • Any other wireless devices

Some precautions that you can take to avoid fertility problems

  • Do not allow very young children to play with cell phones. They are especially susceptible to radiation effects.
  • If you have a Wi-Fi router in your home, make sure it is a low power version and keep it turned off as much as possible.
  • Support any campaign against Wi-Fi use in schools.
  • Do not allow children to sleep with cell phones in the bedroom.
  • Encourage your children not to carry their cell phones close to the body.

Questions you need to answer, based on research outcomes of the fertility problems and DNA damage presented by exposure to microwave radiation:

  • If your child is being exposed to this radiation while at school, are you satisfied with that?
  • You have a Wi-Fi router in your home to which your child has access to after school. Are you ok with it?
  • Some schools lease their buildings or rooftops for the erection of cell phone aerials and towers. Does your child’s school?

As a parent with young children or even with much older children, if you are concerned about their biological health and potential future fertility problems, you need to take action. Children quickly get addicted to using their cell phones, but with firm, positive action, it is possible to prevent this. It is certainly within your power to curb the use, even if means cutting down on airtime for which you pay. You will most likely become a most unpopular parent, but it will be worthwhile in the end as you can reduce the chance of fertility problems in the future.
